Exotic plants have seldom been given names to match their beauty.
Paphiopedilum is,however,a notable exception.Like its close ally Cypripedium,its generic
name can be literally translated as the "slipper of Aphrodite". Paphiopedilum derives from the Greek "Paphos", an
alternative name for Aphrodite,and"pedilon" meaning slipper.
